Behind the headhouse stretches the large train shed with its wide and canopied doors to allow ingress and egress of bulky freight. The truss structure in the roof of the train shed inside must not be missed.
The late federalist style facade, serene and subtle, of Savannah’s Central of Georgia Station’s headhouse.
THE PRINCIPAL FEATURES of the headhouse and the factors building are the classic federalist touches, such as raised brickwork, the unadulterated symmetry of windows and doors, the use of stained glass, the limestone footings and massive main entrances with their substantial stairways, and the decorative flourishes of cupolas and cornices. When you look at these two buildings, it’s easy to understand why the federalist style is often also called early Victorian; it is clearly the bridge between the early neocolonial and Georgian styles of the eighteenth century and the full Victorian style of the latter part of the nineteenth century.
The Greek revival office building—in another style popular with the Victorians—has a stately portico supported by six Doric columns supporting a handsome, unadorned pediment. The roundhouse and its repair shops are classic Victorian industrial buildings, stolid and utilitarian to the core. For railroad aficionados and children, they are well worth a visit, since they showcase installations such as an extensive blacksmithing shop and a large machine shop; in addition they have on display interesting rolling stock, both freight and passenger, restored to its original condition, including the luxurious “rolling office” carriage used by the president of the Central of Georgia Railroad. The roundhouse also has a functioning turntable, and on weekends rides are available.
